According to various reports, President Trump will likely soon issue an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education. This is a threat to the future of public education nationwide and therefore a threat to the future of our children nationwide. While the full legal and practical implications of such an action remain unclear, the Public School Forum team is actively working to understand its potential impact on North Carolina’s schools, students, and educators.
The Department of Education was established by Congress in 1979 and plays a critical role in ensuring federal education laws are upheld, civil rights protections are enforced, and essential funding reaches schools across the country. Any attempt to eliminate it would require congressional approval and would likely face significant legal and constitutional challenges. Whatever happens with the federal Department of Education does not change the fact that every young person has a right to a free, quality public education. This right is fundamental to the wellbeing of our children, our communities and our democracy.
As we continue to assess the situation, we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting North Carolina’s public school students, educators and families. We will provide updates as more details emerge and we will continue to work with state and national partners to advocate for policies that strengthen rather than weaken public education. As has been repeatedly demonstrated in times of uncertainty, our local public schools’ dedication to the success and well-being of students remains strong, and thus, our dedication to supporting our local public schools remains strong as well. We will keep you updated as things progress, follow along here and in our weekly news roundup in the Friday Report.
