RALEIGH, NC (September 9, 2024) – Before the 2024 Primary Election in March The Public School Forum of North Carolina distributed a survey to all candidates running for the North Carolina General Assembly to gauge their stance on various education policy issues. Over 100 candidates participated in this survey. In preparation for the General Election, The Forum has again invited all NCGA candidates to complete the same survey, and their responses are now available.
The six questions posed in the questionnaire address key education policy issues that impact public schools across our state. The questions are listed below:
- In North Carolina, the state government bears responsibility for providing, through taxation and otherwise, a uniform and free system of public education. Do you believe that the state is adequately funding our public schools? What changes, if any, would you propose related to funding for education in order to ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive a sound basic education?
- As a member of the North Carolina General Assembly, what policies would you champion in order to ensure that all students have access to a qualified, diverse, dedicated educator workforce?
- How do you foresee the expansion of North Carolina’s Opportunity Scholarship voucher program shaping the future of education in NC and how do you plan to ensure accountability of the public tax dollars going to private schools through vouchers? What research or evidence informs your position on school vouchers?
- What does equity in education mean to you? How would you propose assessing and measuring progress toward achieving equity in public schools, and what benchmarks or indicators would you prioritize?
- How can the General Assembly allocate resources to ensure schools are equipped to address school safety and mental health needs without compromising the learning environment?
- How do you think the Parent Bill of Rights legislation passed in the 2023 session will impact students and schools across the state?
