When we talk about preparing students for life, it’s easy to focus on test scores, GPAs, and graduation rates. Those metrics matter, but they don’t tell the whole story. Another essential element in preparing students for life is presenting them with possibility. Students believing they have options, feeling empowered to choose a path that aligns with their goals, and knowing that the adults and institutions around them are working to remove barriers instead of reinforcing them is essential.
In North Carolina, we ask a lot of our local public schools. We expect them to educate, nurture, support and guide students from kindergarten through senior year. One of the biggest responsibilities tasked to schools is helping students imagine and build a future that extends far beyond the classroom. That requires more than strong academics. It requires systems that propel students forward.
That’s why programs like NC College Connect matter. College is not the only path to success, but every student deserves a real opportunity to make that choice for themselves. Too often, the college application process feels like a maze. Paperwork, fees, confusing requirements and uncertainty can overwhelm even the most determined student. And for students who are the first in their family to consider college, or who attend schools with limited counseling resources, those obstacles can feel insurmountable at times.
Direct-admission programs flip that dynamic. Instead of asking students to prove they belong, they begin from the premise that students do belong. NC College Connect allows eligible students to receive concrete offers from participating colleges based on their actual course work and performance. The message is powerful: you have options, you have a place and your future is within reach.
As a state, we talk often about workforce development, economic mobility and attracting industries of the future. But none of that is possible without human capital. We need young people who are educated, supported and ready to innovate. When we invest in programs that remove barriers and expand options, we’re doing more than helping individual students. We’re strengthening communities and closing opportunity gaps in order to create a more resilient North Carolina.
Preparing students for life requires more than hope. It requires partnerships between K–12 schools, colleges, communities and families. It requires policies and partnerships that reflect the belief that talent is everywhere, even when opportunity is not. When local public schools and higher education institutions share responsibility for making the transition into adulthood more navigable, students experience a smoother and more connected journey, making them better positioned to choose the future that fits them.
Programs like NC College Connect are a reminder that when we remove barriers and strengthen partnerships to create a statewide ecosystem, rather than working in silos, we open doors rather than make possibilities real.
