RALEIGH, NC (March 7, 2025)- After two successful years of strengthening connections between North Carolina’s local public schools and lawmakers, Bring Your Legislator to School Day is expanding to become North Carolina Legislators in Schools Week. During the week of April 7 members of the North Carolina General Assembly will visit schools in their communities and engage in conversations with superintendents, educators and students.
“North Carolina Legislators in Schools Week is a vital opportunity for lawmakers to step into our schools, see the dedication of our educators and staff, hear directly from students, and engage with their community stakeholders. When legislators experience the positive energy, challenges, and successes of our schools firsthand, it fosters deeper understanding and collaboration,” said 2023 Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year Donna Bledsoe. “This initiative not only strengthens connections but also celebrates and advocates for the incredible work happening in North Carolina’s public schools every day. These experiences ensure that the voices of those who work with and support our students are carried to Raleigh, shaping policies that reflect the needs of all schools and communities across our state.”
Bring Your Legislator to School Day was introduced in 2023 to create an opportunity for legislators to experience the day-to-day reality of North Carolina’s elementary and secondary schools. Organizers hope that through these visits legislators will gain a first-hand look at the exciting things happening in local public schools as well as a better understanding of the challenges students and educators face.
“North Carolina Legislators in Schools Week is such a vital event because it gives our lawmakers the opportunity to see firsthand the incredible work our teachers and students are doing every day,” said Heather Smith, 2024 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year. “It’s a chance for open dialogue and collaboration, ensuring that we continue to advocate for the resources and support our students need to thrive. When we understand each other better, we can create a stronger, more impactful future for education.”
This event is organized by current and former members of the North Carolina Teachers and Principals of the Year cohorts with support from the Public School Forum of North Carolina.
