RALEIGH, NC (December 7, 2021) – Dr. Tiece M. Ruffin, a U.S. Fulbright Scholar, Mother-scholar, and Professor of Africana Studies and Education at the University of North Carolina Asheville, has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Public School Forum of North Carolina for a two-year appointment.
“We are so excited to welcome Dr. Ruffin to our Board of Directors during this critical time for our schools, as we strive to provide nonpartisan, evidence-based research, policy analysis and innovative programs to support public education throughout North Carolina,” said Dr. Mary Ann Wolf, President & Executive Director of the Public School Forum of North Carolina. “The passion and dedication of our Board of Directors and Advisory Board members for students and teachers across North Carolina, public education, and the Forum are unmatched — and we know that Dr. Ruffin’s perspective will be invaluable in this important work.”
“It is an honor to join the Public School Forum as a member of the Board of Directors to engage in state-wide work for humane, just, inclusive, and equitable education institutions, policies, and practices that support education justice for all children in our state,” said Dr. Ruffin. “As a public education champion in North Carolina for 15 years, working as a teacher educator, education advocate, activist and consultant firmly rooted in the work of education justice, I’m absolutely thrilled to work in solidarity with the Forum to engage with various communities of practice in education equity and justice.
Tiece M. Ruffin, Ph.D., teaches courses in exceptional children, diverse learners and pedagogical approaches for the diverse and inclusive K-12 classroom, and African American education at UNC Asheville. Dr. Ruffin has authored and co-authored several publications and presented at both national and international conferences on topics of equity, inclusion, learners with special and diverse needs, pedagogical approaches for the diverse and inclusive classroom, service learning, education justice, and the internationalization of teacher education. An alumna of the Forum’s Education Policy and Fellowship Program (EPFP), Ruffin is an accomplished professional with the distinction of being the 2020 University of North Carolina System Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching recipient for UNC Asheville, a U.S. Fulbright Scholar, a North Carolina-West Education Policy Fellow, Past-President’s Fellow of the National Association of State Directors of Special Education, and a Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar in the U.S. Department of Education.
In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of the Public School Forum of North Carolina, Dr. Ruffin also serves on the Board of Francine Delany New School for Children, and she serves on the Buncombe County Community Engagement Office Isaac Coleman Grant Review Team. Dr. Ruffin is a veteran teacher educator and defender of human rights as an education justice advocate, consultant, and freedom fighter working to dismantle oppressive and structurally inequitable education systems.
