The Boys & Girls Club of the Plateau, the largest afterschool and summer learning program in Jackson County, North Carolina, is honored to host Congressman Chuck Edwards for a site visit focused on 21st Century Community Learning Centers on Thursday, August 1, 2025. This site visit is being hosted in partnership with the North Carolina Center for Afterschool Programs, North Carolina’s Statewide Afterschool Network.
During the site visit, Congressman Edwards will meet with staff leadership and students from Boys & Girls Club of Plateau, regional supporters of afterschool and summer learning, and statewide afterschool leaders and advocates. The Congressman will tour Club facilities, observe programs with children and youth in action, and hear directly from local community members and students about the impact that afterschool and summer learning has on children and working families in his district.
“This visit and Congressman Edward’s engagement offers a unique opportunity for us to shine a light on the critical role that afterschool and summer learning plays in the lives of students, working families, and communities,” said Elizabeth Anderson, Director of the North Carolina Center for Afterschool Programs. “In Western North Carolina and across our state, these programs are lifelines for working families, providing affordable, safe programming and care during critical hours and enabling parents to work, which in turn supports the region’s workforce and local economy.”
Afterschool and summer programs offer vital academic, social, and emotional support and career development opportunities for youth while also helping working families bridge the gap between school and home. Research consistently shows that regular participation in high-quality out-of-school time programming improves school attendance, academic performance, and long-term success.
