Nishelle Henson is a middle school mathematics educator in Macon County Schools in the mountains of Western North Carolina. A graduate of both Western Carolina University and NC State University with a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, she is passionate about creating classrooms where strong relationships and meaningful learning go hand in hand.
Nishelle was named the 2026 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Western Region Teacher of the Year, an honor that has allowed her to advocate for students, educators, and rural schools across North Carolina. She is passionate about teacher leadership and ensuring educators have a voice in the decisions that affect their classrooms and communities.
Ironically, Nishelle never considered herself a “math person” growing up, which has become one of her greatest strengths as a teacher. She understands what it feels like to struggle with mathematics and loves helping students recognize what they are capable of achieving. Above all, she believes students learn best when they know they are seen, valued, and believed in. Outside the classroom, Nishelle is a wife and proud mother of two boys. Her faith is central to her life and grounds the way she approaches her family, her work, and her commitment to serving others.
