Hannah Moon

Hannah Moon, the NC Burroughs Wellcome Southeast Regional Teacher of the Year, is a passionate veteran educator from Wilmington, NC, where she earned both her B.A. in English literature and M.Ed. in Secondary Education from UNCW.

In addition to being a National Board Certified Teacher since 2021, she also serves as a member of the National Humanities Center’s Teacher Advisory Council, the NC Governor’s Teacher Advisory Council, the NHCS Finance Committee, and she is a UNC Morehead-Cain Impact Educator. She has mentored BTs and partnered with UNCW student interns for 15 years.

At Laney High School, where she has taught 10th and 12th grade English and AP Literature for 21 years, she leads as Department Chair and recently founded a peer mentor program, AP Ambassadors, and advises the school’s Book Club and Scholars Club.

Outside of the classroom, Hannah’s 2 energetic children are the light of her life and keep her busy coaching soccer, spending long days on the beach, and exploring North Carolina’s beautiful scenery. When she has a second to breathe, she loves to read, travel, shop, and maintain her 1011-day streak on Duolingo.
