Dr. Charles Aiken

Charles A. Aiken, Ed.D., is the Section Chief for Math, Science, and STEM at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, supporting statewide standards work and professional learning that helps educators and district leaders put new expectations into practice. His work spans curriculum and assessment, access to STEM education, and the connection between high school learning and postsecondary opportunities.

Charles brings more than 25 years of experience as a teacher, principal, chief academic officer, university instructor, and state education leader. He has served schools and communities across North Carolina in rural, urban, and suburban settings. Throughout his career, he has worked with educators, students, families, and community partners to use evidence, strengthen instruction, and make decisions that respond to local needs. As a Policy Fellows mentor, he hopes to bring a practical perspective on how education policy is developed, understood, and carried out in schools and districts. He is the proud father of two boys and the lucky husband of a fellow educator.
