
Dr. John Lassiter brings more than 15 years of experience as a public school educator and leader. He was a state finalist for North Carolina Principal of the Year in 2023 and 2025, and recently named President of the North Carolina Principal and Assistant Principal Association (NCPAPA). Dr. Lassiter is recognized for his commitment to empowering educators and advancing student achievement across the state.
A North Carolina Teaching Fellow and NC State University graduate, Dr. Lassiter began his career as a high school math teacher and coach before transitioning into educational leadership. After earning his MSA Degree from Elizabeth City State University, he served as a middle school principal to start his career. Under his leadership Chowan Middle School was designated as a “National School to Watch”. Currently the principal at Hertford Grammar School (HGS), the elementary school he attended as a child. HGS has met or exceeded state growth expectations every year since the COVID-19 pandemic and recently has been named a Capturing Kids Hearts Rising Star school. Dr. Lassiter, who earned his Doctoral Degree from East Carolina University, believes that teachers are the #1 factor in student success, relationships are foundational to learning, and technology is a tool to enhance—not a replacement—for effective teaching.
Guided by the principles of servant leadership and the words of 1 Peter 5:2-3, Dr. Lassiter leads with purpose, integrity, and care. Outside of education, he serves as a Deacon at his church and enjoys fishing, golf, croquet, and family time with his wife Jenna and three daughters, Emily, Erianne, and Ella.
