Abbey Nobles is the 2022 Burrough’s Welcome Fund South East Regional Teacher of the Year. She was a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, 2010 Cohort, and is National Board Certified. It is Abbey’s eighth year in the classroom as a High School English Teacher. She specializes in teaching students with behavior intervention needs, Multilingual Learners, and students who need intensive academic support. She is passionate about building relationships with students that empower their success: both academically and personally. Abbey prizes community collaboration and partnerships, specifically Communities in Schools (CIS) and Leading Into New Communities (LINC). She is the co-lead and co-founder for the Student Equity Teams across the New Hanover County School’s District. Abbey believes that instruction can only stem from having an abundance of knowledge of your learners and that you must love your students more than you love your content; the first step is understanding the individual. She leverages her love for travel, language acquisition, recognizing cultures individuality and bridging cultural divides by activating culturally responsive pedagogies in the classroom and advocating for these practices in leadership positions. Abbey believes teaching is a puzzle that you work and rework daily to meet the needs of students and bring them into a setting where they feel a strong sense of belonging and pride in themselves.
