Education: Everybody's Business Coalition

General Information and Membership

Nearly seven years ago, strong feelings among leading CEO’s of large North Carolina businesses that school improvement efforts were not moving quickly enough caused a series of discussions to begin that culminated with the creation of the Education: Everybody’s Business Coalition.

Today, nearly seven years later, the Coalition has become a strong, recognized force for school improvement, and the relationships among its member groups continue to strengthen as they work for stronger public schools.

From its beginning, the Coalition has attempted to engage more people in discussions about policy issues having an impact on public schools. Through its publications, the Coalition reaches Chambers of Commerce, educators, and large and small business people across the state. By issuing position statements and working with media outlets, the Coalition has helped involve more and more people in the debate over ways to improve the schools of North Carolina.

Companies which are themselves committed to building stronger schools for North Carolina make it possible for the Coalition to sponsor conferences such as the upcoming Collaboration Conference (December 11, 1998), and to provide information on school reform issues. From the beginning, the Coalition has been supported by:
  • BellSouth
  • Carolina Power & Light
  • Duke Power
  • Food Lion
  • GlaxoSmithKline
  • Guilford Mills
  • Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance
  • RJR Tobacco
  • Sprint
  • Wachovia Bank & Trust
Commenting on the business support, Coalition Chairman Phil Kirk said, "The willingness of leading North Carolina industries to continue to support the drive for stronger schools is testimony to the value they place on education. Not only are they supporting efforts like the Coalition’s, they are supporting innovative programs in schools across North Carolina, their employees are working with schools and with at-risk youth, and their executive staff give up countless hours to support local partnership efforts."
